History of Dubai

The first human living setup began in the history of Dubai was around 3000 BC. At that time the region was inhabited by the nomadic cattle herders. In the third century AD, the region came under the control of the Sassanid Empire. Sassanid ruling of the area lasted until the seventh century until the Umayyad Caliphate took over the control of area and introduced Islam to the region.

The people of Dubai lived here by fishing and pearl diving. This continued for a 1000 years until change come with the building of first town in 1799 by the Bani Yas clan. Bani Yas clan was established in Dubai under the dependency of Abu Dhabi.

In 1833 Dubai became a separate Sheikhdom under the Al-Maktoum dynasty of the Bani Yas tribe. The invention of artificial pearls in 1926 and the Great Depression in 1929 was a major setback for the income stream of Dubai. The international market for Dubai pearl was collapsed due to this.

This made Sheikh Saeed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to look for an alternative income source and made Dubai as a re-export port hub. The discovery of oil in 1966 changed the level of growth in the country to an unexpected level. This led Dubai becoming the most modern, business-centered and vibrant city-state of today.
